| In a world with increasing tension and recourse to violence, Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies can support the individual and community to encourage respect for other human beings and a willingness to work together to find solutions to common problems. The Movement’s Fundamental Principles and the dissemination of International Humanitarian Law can help bring this about in line with its mandate.
The promotion and dissemination of IHL is one of the indispensable tasks carried out by the Jordan Red Crescent. The Jordan Red Crescent runs a full-scale programme and aims to attain enhanced country-wide implementation of the Fundamental Principles and IHL through increased advocacy and communication. It is for this reason that a national committee to oversee the implementation of IHL within the country was established in compliance with the resolutions of the International Conference of the Movement of the Red Cross and Red Crescent held in Geneva in 1995. The JRC works closely with the ICRC in the dissemination of the Fundamental Principles and IHL, as well as other priorities of humanitarian concern. Continuous cooperation between the JRC and ICRC make it possible to build and strengthen the capacity of the national society in this field. A pilot initiative in the Middle East region realized by the Jordan Red Crescent in 1999 was the integration of the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent and the key aspects of IHL within the school curricula – thus enabling students to be sufficiently aware of the role of the JRC and the critical importance of those Principles and IHL. This was accomplished in cooperation with the Ministry of Education - the patron of the JRC student branch. The committees that exist within the student branches take responsibility for dissemination within their respective constituencies. Students from all over the Kingdom visit the JRC Headquarters. On an annual basis the JRC holds training of trainers’ workshops on the dissemination of IHL for its volunteers as well as for instructors from the student branch. It organizes around thirty student gatherings around the country and carries out different dissemination activities e.g presentations, seminars, Best Red Crescent School magazine contest, round table discussions, student camps, performing sketch plays, etc. JRC activities have also extended to regional and international level through organizing RC/RC youth camps. |
